Episode 7: Literature Review Myth Busting w/ James Hayton

in podcast

Episode 7 is an interview with James Hayton from 3 Month Thesis. Anyone who follows me on Twitter or Facebook will know about James and his amazing site as I’m always reposting his articles and resources there. If you don’t know who he is or you haven’t been on his site lately then go and check it out. He always puts up very thought provoking posts that question the conventional way of doing things.

In this interview we get loads of great advice from James. I knew we’d been talking for a long time but I didn’t realise quite how much great information was in there until I listened to the audio again. This is great episode and I recommend you keep a pen and paper handy to take some notes!

James is a very successful Thesis Coach and offers 1:1 coaching and also a special membership portion of his site where you can get access to very in depth tutorials. I myself am a member and I love it!

Here’s a great and very popular example of what James talks about on his blog.

    Hello Ben and James,
This is great, sensible advice about how to manage the abundance of academic work that plagues all of us. I most like the way you focus on how the conventional way of doing things is often the least effective – one of my mantras too. People need to listen to the business about using your first sentence as your first draft and NOT writing, writing, writing with no goal. I did that when I was writing my dissertation and sure enough I created long, unmanageable drafts that were a nightmare to wrangle into something with a strong argument. My favorite quotation from the interview: “It’s better to read and review five excellent articles than 100 mediocre ones.”
